The Ecstasy of Gold

The latest version of Fortress Forever comes with a great piece of startup music that many will recognise as a cover of Ennio Morricone’s famous “The Ecstasy of Gold”, from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Its also well known amongst Metallica fans, as they use it to open their live shows.

This particular version is an acoustic guitar rendition of the song, and you can listen to it here.

Race Driver: GRID

I picked this up for my Xbox 360 yesterday and have since become quite addicted to it. I do enjoy most racing games except the ultra realistic ones where the slightest mistake results in utter failure. This one is no exception. It has real cars plus the fantastic damage modeling used in DIRT last year. There’s a wide variety of racing disciplines in the game, including:

  • Open-wheeled single-seater circuit racing
  • European touring cars
  • American muscle car street racing
  • Stock car racing
  • Japanese drifting
  • Japanese Touge events (i.e. head to head hill climb/descent runs)

There’s a few more that don’t come to mind right now also. Graphics are fantastic looking and the car handling feels good to me. The 360’s controller suits driving games perfectly as usual, and the game supports steering wheel peripherals also.
The game is also available on PS3 and PC, both in shops and on Steam.

9/10

Best game ever made.

My favourite game of all time is still the classic TIE Fighter Collector’s CD from LucasArts, released for DOS back in 1994-1995. I remember spending many, many hours plugging away at it back then.

Today I got it running again on my modern, 64-bit Windows Vista system :)

What you need:

  • The game CD or an ISO of it - ISO is better since DOSBox can just mount that so you don’t need to have the CD in your drive all the time.
  • A copy of the latest version of DOSBox, the free MS-DOS emulator.
  • A joystick. This game really sucks with keyboard and mouse. I got a cheapo Logitech USB one from Argos for €30. It has a load of programmable buttons that I will probably never use.
  • Lots and lots of free time. This game will consume it all.

DOSBox really has come on in leaps and bounds since the last time I tried it, which was about 2 years ago. It has proper sound support now, and I can play Tie Fighter in its uber-high-for-the-time 640×480 mode. The game runs flawlessly in DOSBox - I completed the first battle this afternoon. It really brought me back - all the keyboard controls from the game came flooding back from some dark corner of my mind.

Best game ever.

I love you GTA4.

So I finished the main story missions in Grand Theft Auto 4 this evening. It was super high quality all the way. It took me approximately 50 hours and there’s still tons of side stuff left to do in the game, as well as multiplayer and general sandbox fooling about.

All that for €60. That’s what I call a bargain.

I can’t see anything else that gets released this year topping GTA4. Its certainly my game of the year.

Burnout Paradise for PC

Criterion Games today announced that they plan to release Burnout Paradise on PC. I’ve already got it on the Xbox 360 and enjoyed it a lot. The PC, however, is my platform of choice. I’d love to see what modders could get up to with Burnout. Seeing it in uber-high resolutions should be nice too.

GTA4 = best. game. ever.

Michael hooked me up with a copy of GTA4 for the Xbox 360 :) Sendit.com can suck my balls.

I’ve spent the last 5 hours totally engrossed in the world of Grand Theft Auto 4 and I still can’t get enough of it. This game has such fantastic atmosphere. The city feels like its alive.

The first time I accidentally had a head on car crash and Niko came flying out the windscreen I nearly shit my pants laughing. Realistic physics + ragdolls + Grand Theft Auto = epic win. If you haven’t already got this game, and you can find it… BUY IT. I say all this before even trying the multiplayer component of the game which by all accounts is fantastic fun also.

Goldrush

Valve released a new map (and consequently, a new game type) for Team Fortress 2 this week, called Goldrush. I had gotten a bit tired of the game but this new map has me addicted again. It is massively fun. It will help to fill the void while I STILL WAIT FOR GTA4.

Goldrush is done in an art style similar to that of dustbowl but I find the gameplay much more fun. Essentially the blue team has to escort a mine cart along the tracks until it reaches the end of the line. The red team has to stop them. The cart only moves when blue players are close to it. The more players close by, the faster it moves.

Since the cart has to follow a fixed path you can expect lots of sentry guns and ambushes. The fixed path focuses players to congregate in the same area, making for some fun action.
