Apparently, all Germans that are members of a number of established religions (mostly Catholics and Protestants), are required to pay a “church tax“, which is 9% of their income tax.
Reminds me of tithes from the middle ages.
And, hilariously, the non-religious don’t pay any church tax, or any other extra tax in its place. DW-World reports that this is causing millions to leave the church in Germany - Once a person declares to state authorities that they are no longer a member of one of the religions involved, they no longer have to pay church tax, saving themselves a lot of money.
The German state collects billions of euros each year in church tax, and passes it on to the religions involved.
As an atheist I find this both hilarious and disturbing. Hilarious that the religious are getting hit with extra taxes, and disturbing that the state actually goes along with fundraising for them.

I saw an interesting article on Wikipedia’s “Did you know” section today: Wayne McLaren, the American model who portrayed the Marlboro Man, died of lung cancer. Ironic, eh?
Looks like my employers had a change of mind, I’m not getting moved up north any more.

2nd class honours, and I’m bloody delighted with it! I’m interested in finding out how I did in each individual subject but that info won’t be available for a couple of weeks - but hey, it doesn’t matter now!

Dylan Moran was absolutely excellent last night at the Watergate, despite the odd heckling arsehole. If you get a chance to see his live show in the near future, take it - it will be worth it.
Also, the amount of violence going down afterwards in Nero’s last night was unbelievable.
I just saw Bill Bailey at Langtons here in Kilkenny as part of the cat laughs festival, and he was absolutely fucking excellent as usual. I’d provide linkage and stuff, but i’m posting this from my phone and its a bit cumbersome in that respect. Anyways, onward to Dylan Moran!
