iPhone 3G 2.2.1 unlocking now possible. Kinda.

And its easy too, but there’s a catch. It needs to have bootloader version 5.08, which mine conveniently does. If you have 5.09 or newer, you’re still screwed for now.
Full and idiot-proof instructions on iClarified. Essentially all it does is downgrade the baseband firmware of your iPhone to a version that the existing soft unlock tools work with. It worked perfectly on my O2 iPhone.

This man is a hero
by Steve on May.26, 2009, under Ireland, News, Politics, Television
As seen on last night’s Questions and Answers. This is the most moving thing I’ve ever seen on television. Please repost this video on your own blog or whatever to bring as much attention as possible to it, and thus as much shame as possible on the government and the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland. Maybe then they might admit some responsibility and treat the victims properly.

Got home from Chicago yesterday morning and tried to stay awake to combat the jet lag. I failed later in the day and slept for 12 hours last night! Anyway, had a good time and took tons of photos, which you can see here. Here’s a couple of samples.
nVidia multiple monitor support sucks.
by Steve on May.09, 2009, under Games, Nerdism, Technology
Today I hooked my PC up to my nice 32″ HDTV using a DVI-to-HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. The picture looks wonderful etc. However, there’s a problem. The main reason I did this was to play games like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 on the big TV rather than my small PC monitor.
The problem is nVidia’s graphics drivers do not support running things in full screen mode on a secondary display. Huh? Wtf? A quick google reveals that people have been complaining about this since at least 2004. The only current solution is to make the TV the primary display before playing games, then change it back (manually) to the monitor when I’m finished gaming. What a pain in the ass.

Mad Men
by Steve on May.05, 2009, under Television
I started watching Mad Men for the first time last weekend. In less than a week I burned through the entire first season. Great stuff. I love the 1960’s setting. Despite not even being born then, they seem to have it nailed.
Also, Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan Holloway in the show is HOT.

George Lee puts a bee in the FF bonnet
by Steve on May.05, 2009, under Ireland, News, Politics
Judging by the reaction of the Fianna Fail (no, there is not a fada missing there) faithful on Joe Duffy’s whineline today, George Lee putting himself up for nomination as the Fine Gael candidate for the Dublin South by-election has really given them a sound kick up the hole. Thus I approve. More please.
