Base jumping

I used my spanky new D90 to capture this clip this morning:

Crazy bastards.

Woah, just reading the spec sheet, 720p… and I assume using what ever lens you want? that’s pretty damn interesting… telephoto and macro stuff comes to mind!
    What’s the original quality like?

Yep, any Nikon (or compatible) F-mount lens will work. The original quality is pretty good, but I found it a little choppy when playing back — but I think that may be due to my memory card. Its an older super-cheap 2GB SD card that I was using with my old D50, with most likely crappy write speeds. I would like to try something like a SanDisk extreme III with it. I’m going to get one off memoryc when I go home :)

Also, there are a number of caveats to the video mode. Clips are limited to a max of 5 minutes each and you cannot autofocus in video mode, though you are still free to manually zoom and focus. Audio is recorded mono only, and picks up noises when you do go manually focusing. You may have noticed the camera changing exposure throughout the above clip - that is because I failed to use its AE-lock feature :)
Also, since the camera has to lock the mirror up when you’re recording video, you can’t use the (lovely and big) viewfinder for video - you have to use the (also lovely and big) LCD screen.

If you drop the resolution down below 720p you can record for something like 20 minutes at a time and memory card speed doesn’t really matter any more. There are some good videos on vimeo showing some real good work done with the D90. For instance, some good shallow depth of field stuff. He too forgot to lock the exposure :) Looks great though with a combination of less compression and a stably mounted camera.

That’s great stuff, I really like the big camera look on some of these vids.
