Best game ever made.

My favourite game of all time is still the classic TIE Fighter Collector’s CD from LucasArts, released for DOS back in 1994-1995. I remember spending many, many hours plugging away at it back then.

Today I got it running again on my modern, 64-bit Windows Vista system :)

What you need:

  • The game CD or an ISO of it - ISO is better since DOSBox can just mount that so you don’t need to have the CD in your drive all the time.
  • A copy of the latest version of DOSBox, the free MS-DOS emulator.
  • A joystick. This game really sucks with keyboard and mouse. I got a cheapo Logitech USB one from Argos for €30. It has a load of programmable buttons that I will probably never use.
  • Lots and lots of free time. This game will consume it all.

DOSBox really has come on in leaps and bounds since the last time I tried it, which was about 2 years ago. It has proper sound support now, and I can play Tie Fighter in its uber-high-for-the-time 640×480 mode. The game runs flawlessly in DOSBox - I completed the first battle this afternoon. It really brought me back - all the keyboard controls from the game came flooding back from some dark corner of my mind.

Best game ever.

Urgh, the Xwing game I had came on floppy disks… and was probably running at 320×240.
I’ve no idea what happened to it.

Yeah, the original X-Wing was 320×240 (or was it 200?) only, and came on about 5 floppies. The Tie Fighter CD bundled all the expansion packs and the l33t 640×480 mode that wasn’t available on the floppy version together.

Ahaa, yeah… I noticed the CD-ROM(!!) version had some fancy FMV sequences as well.
My version had static cartoon-like cut scenes.

I also remember at the time I didn’t have a soundcard and I could only wistfully imagine what the exciting sound effects and music might be like!
I think around that time I actually had a dream that I got a soundcard and played that game… erm, which is a bit sad on so many levels.

I think I might have re-played it at a later stage when I got a better PC and Windows 95… but meh, for some reason I don’t share your nostalgia on this one.

SNES and Megadrive emulators on the other hand :D

Tie Fighter is one of the few old games I can replay that does not cause the old rose-tinted spectacles to shatter :)

GTA4 was the best shit ever while I was playing it, but now that I’ve finished everything besides shooting pigeons/doing stunt jumps it has lost a bit of its shine. Still a brilliant game though and right up there near the top of the list :)
