Bertie finally calls the election

Bertie Ahern went to Áras an Uachtaráin at 8 this morning to ask the president to dissolve the Dáil. The election will take place on May 24th - a Thursday. Apparently election posters were erected all over the place within minutes.

Weird Al - Polkarama!

I haven’t been able to find a real video of this, but this one on YouTube is a good replacement. It features the aforementioned Polkarama with clips from the videos of the songs its actually based on :)

SF’s Martin Ferris TD arrested for drink driving

I’m sure I won’t be the first to say “LOL!“.
The RTE report says he was arrested “under suspicion” of drink driving, and a sample has been sent for analysis which will determine whether or not he will be prosecuted.

Ferris’s wikipedia entry has already been updated to include this information, along with stuff about his IRA past (he spent 10 years in prison for his involvement in importing weapons and explosives for the IRA in the 1980s).

Update 10 May 2007: RTE News says lab results show that Ferris was not in fact over the limit.

Ubuntu 7.04 “Feisty Fawn”

The latest release of Ubuntu Linux is out, known as “Feisty Fawn”. My first impression (having installed it on the same laptop that I had version 6.10 “Edgy Eft” on) is that it certainly has improved but there is still a long way to go. The single best improvement I have noticed so far is that WPA security for wireless networks works from the get-go, assuming your wireless card is supported. That was one of my biggest gripes with pretty much every Linux distribution I’ve tried. Fair play to them for getting that working.
Pretty much all of my laptop’s hardware with the exception of its integrated multiformat card reader works fine with Ubuntu 7.04. I still experienced the same annoying problem with screen resolutions that I had with 6.10 though. My laptop has a wide screen with a resolution of 1280×800, which is very, very common. Ubuntu only offered three resolutions, all 4:3, even after installing the nVidia graphics driver.
I had to go and manually edit xorg.conf to add 1280×800 to each display mode that I might possibly want to use it with. My laptop’s Synaptics touchpad also doesn’t behave properly (scrolling, typing detection and so on), but I think there are packages out there to sort that out.

All in all, its getting better, and I’ll continue to use it on my laptop but I think for the average user there’s still a ways to go.

Michael Moore vs Fred Phelps

This clip dates from around 1999. It features Michael Moore and a pink bus full of homosexuals called the Sodomobile :)
He’s using the bus to tour around states in the US in which (at least in 1999) homosexuality is illegal. They encounter the notorious Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist “Church”. If you haven’t heard of these assholes, I suggest you find and watch the Louis Theroux documentary on it that screened on BBC2 recently. Its called “The Most Hated Family in America”.

Here’s a quick synopsis of them: They travel around America, picketing funerals of gay people, soldiers and pretty much anyone else they believe to be a “fag enabler”. They’re some sick twisted fucks. I’m not going to link to their (awful) website.

Old Phelpsy is a lot younger looking in that clip than he is in Louis Theroux’s much more recent programme. I wonder how they’d like it if the sodomobile showed up for his funeral?

New nVidia drivers for Windows Vista

Nvidia have today finally released new drivers for Windows Vista 32-bit (I think there may be 64 bit ones available too, haven’t checked). They are version 158.18.
They have now broken the old unified driver tradition and split them into separate releases for Geforce 6, 7 and 8 series, and then a unified driver for all older cards. Hopefully this will resolve the 8800 series performance problems in Vista. I’m not lucky enough to know, not having an 8800 series card :)

Funniest RTE news story ever

‘Chinglish’ signs targeted for Olympics

RTE News has a story about how Chinese authorities are trying to eradicate unintentionally funny/stupid/embarrassing signage ahead of the Beijing Olympics. Particularly funny is the photograph they have of a ’slippery surface’ sign proclaiming “TO TAKE NOTICE OF SAFE, THE SLIPPERY ARE VERY CRAFTY”
Here’s another quality one:

A bright neon sign advertising Beijing’s ‘Hospital for Anus and Intestine Disease’ is now the ‘Hospital for Proctology’.
