A genuinely cool Windows Vista feature

– At least for digital photography enthusiasts anyway! I stumbled across this on the web today. Vista supports a multimedia-style codec system for digital camera RAW files. That is, if your camera’s manufacturer makes a codec available, Vista can handle their proprietary RAW files like any old JPEG, and can provide an API for third party applications to work with them too. Cool.

It just so happens that Nikon have released their RAW (NEF, in Nikon parlance) codec for Vista, and you can get it here.

Windows XP users, for the moment you’re shit out of luck.

I installed my copy of Vista Home Premium on Friday, so I’m going to give this a go when I get home. I have, until now, been shooting everything in JPEG ‘FINE’ on the camera. I have a 2GB SD card so have plenty of space to shoot RAW. People have gotten some very impressive results processing RAW images as opposed to JPEGs. If I switch to RAW full-time I can see myself archiving loads of stuff off to DVD periodically to keep some disk space free!

More flickr stuff

Wordpress ate my last attempt to post this. Annoying. Anyways, I’ve posted some more stuff up on my flickr - first attempts at night photos with the obligatory car light blur effect. How original! There’s also some photos from the Bronx Zoo.

For example:

Ireland 43, England 13

Well, that was nice :) Croke Park looked wonderful too. Given Scotland’s performance against Italy today, it looks like Ireland has the Triple Crown in the bag again this year! This is Ireland’s biggest ever winning margin against England in rugby, shattering the old record of 22 points that’s stood since 1947.
Lets hope France somehow fucks up and lets us in with a chance of winning the 6 Nations proper!

I’m back

I got back from New York early this morning, although my flight was about an hour and a half late. I’m too tired to do much of anything, so here’s something amusing I saw in the Valentine’s day edition of the New York Post:

Check out my Flickr

I finally signed up for a flickr account as I plan to post any interesting photos I take with the new camera gear there. In the mean time I’ve uploaded some old stuff from my past point and shoot cameras - a noisy 1.3 megapixel Sony Cybershot and my self-destructing 5 megapixel Nikon E5600, along with a camera phone shot or two. Most of them are travel photos.

New York

I had posted a while back about the camera I plan to buy when I go to New York next week. Bok has since persuaded me to go for an SLR (he twisted my rubber arm) over the fixed-lens Fuji. I’m going to pick up a Nikon D50, 18-55mm Nikkor lens and a cheap 70-300mm Sigma telephoto lens. This does blow my original budget out of the water but I think it’ll be a lot better in the long run.

I plan to pick up a cheap/light/portable/mostly crappy plastic tripod too. I have a couple of SD cards (256MB and 2GB) already that’ll fit it fine. Can’t wait now, today is my last day in work before I head off :)
