You greedy bastards
RTE News (heh) tells us today to lube up and bend over in preparation for a shafting from a bunch of greedy television licence bastards:
Television is now much more than a ‘box in the corner’, and the concept of a television licence fee may have to be changed to include such developments as mobile phone streaming and websites such as YouTube, an Oireachtas committee has been told.
So they want to force people to get TV licences for things that have FUCK ALL to do with public service broadcasting? Fuck off. RTE shouldn’t get any TV licence income at all, unless they produce a service like the BBC does. RTE gets TV licence cash and advertising income, and most of its home-made output is still complete crap. Fair City anyone? Celebrity-jigs-and-complete-bollix? Please.
Here’s some more bullshit:
Technology expert Ronan Coy said television can include anything that is made visually available to the consumer, including developments such as Internet-based television stations and video blogging.
Update 15/01/2007: I had called Ronan a wanker for the above, but he informs me that RTE took his comments out of context. See his comment below. Sorry Ronan, I apologise for that.

It’d piss anyone off, I think its ridiculous. If other stations can survive then why can’t RTE? Oh wait… we’ve got to pay Pat Kenny a half million a year and a handful of other presenters a shed load of cash - thats before we get down to the actual programming. Then when they do turn out a good series its too bloody short! 4 episodes here, 4 episodes there…

Germany already introducted this for Mobiles and PC’s. I think its time to go back to my Nokia 3210 and my old Amiga 500!

Hi,
I’m the Ronan Coy that made those comments but they are taken out of context… I was referring to the definition in the new Broadcasting law. I am arguing against this new law and its crazy implementation. I stated that the new law would include any device capable of recieving a TV signal which is total bullshit. As far as I am concerned YouTube, video blogging, molbile TV should not be included as forms of TV subject to a license, unfortunately the new law wants to change all that. I want to have the law modified or scrapped entirely as there are other ways for RTE to make its money. I argued strongly that the TV license would be unenforceable and should be abolished so I’d appreciate if you checked your facts before calling me a wanker!!! P.S you refernced your facts from RTE.ie that very people you are commenting on!!!!

Sorry for calling you a wanker Ronan, but from what was said on the RTE news site that’s how it read! If I was you I would be complaining to them.
I will edit the above post now to reflect this. Shame on RTE for using those comments out of context. I referred to the RTE news site since it was info straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.
Apologies again.
Stephen

No problem Stephen, I think RTE knew exactly what they were doing when they posted those comments on their website. Trying to make it look like I was making the argument for the law and not against it… works in their favour. So much for independant media.
Regards
Ronan

[...] Which earns both RTE and Ronan Coy the wrath of Feckoff.net. Only Ronan himself sees the post and points out that he wasn’t actually speaking in support of the new legislation, quite the contrary. For evil to succeed, requires only that Good Men remain silent. Was never very good at staying silent, just ask my teachers.
About a year ago I finally made the move to banish public television programs from my home, its nothing but deviant behaviour trying to convince the rest of the population, in particular our children, that what is portrayed in the media it is ‘normal’ behaviour for a ‘modern’ society. Dont think so. Family values are what they have always been, not for sale.
My latest move is to remove the tv completely, and replace it with a video projector so we can watch any program without gore, gratuitous violence, or sexual perversions.
Dont get me wrong, Im all for sex, (who isnt) and a bit of kink in the bedroom can be fun, and although a world without borders is ideal, do we REALLY want a world without any moral standards ?
Steve on October 6th, 2007
Fair play to you. While I don’t agree that it is all deviant trash, I admire your decision. There is more utter crap on television than there isn’t. I just follow a few select programmes and ignore the rest. Channel-hopping on sky digital reveals such a massive steaming pile of utter shite that just makes my opinion of humanity drop through the floor.

People!! are you living in the 21st century!!?? What’s wrong with you?
you all know very well that the tv license, now days, is another lame excuse, for the government to raise funds from the poor us…yes it made sense in the 1930, 40, 50’s until the 1990… when in this country were just a few people and for a national tv station to run, the people needed to help out( and it made sense ), but now, we are at in the 21st century, battle of the fittest!! hello!! what ever happened with the right to free, uncensored information, the right to access this information freely and at whatever time you want??? we have the right to choose, a freedom of choice, there is not only the national tv station, we have other choices, if the national tv can not manage themselves than good luck and nice knowing you. But don’t ask the people to chip in, when we have so much choice.
tv licensee? a licensee for a TV?? you realize the times we are living now are much different then the time that this law was issued!? is like that law in England where in some particular time of the day, on a particular street in London you could kill a Scott and get away with it. Yeah …That old!!
You do realize that the national tv stations are making their monies from other sides and not the tv license …i.e. commercials…yeah a good example!! if I pay for a a national tv station to survive I expect that I am not going to be cluttered with people that are trying to sell me things that I don’t need.
